There comes a time when we all have to make an important decision in our lives. When it comes to today’s generation, we want things now, we can’t wait, and we’re constantly trying to find out ways to get to our ultimate goal. By no means is this a bad thing, but our parents just won’t understand this. For them, hard work paid off and everything came with time.
This past week, three of the NBA’s young elite players, fresh into free-agency, decided to team up with each other and create a super team in Miami. Most, if not all basketball fans have called this a selfish move and taking the easy way out in winning a championship.
What did it take for them to make this decision? Who influenced it? How would this decision affect their families? How about their fans? With the power of social media, the voice of the fans have just been magnified. Days before and after the decision was flocked by comments about #thedecision.
One reason was clear in coming to their decision, the trio want to win championships, not one, but multiple. They’ve also mentioned that they want to do win early in their careers rather then team up when they’re past their primes. Considering some of the greatest players of all time have never won a championship, its easy for others to see that they’ve taken the easy road.
Michael Jordan, arguably the greatest basketball player of all time said. “There’s no way, with hindsight, I would’ve ever called up Larry (Bird), called up Magic (Johnson) and said, ‘Hey, look, let’s get together and play on one team.” But maybe Michael just doesn’t understand. Sure, he won 6 championships in Chicago, the team that brought him in, without having to bring in Larry Bird or Magic Johnson. As I said, our generation demands things now! So, as crazy as it sounds, the decision to make a super team in Miami only makes sense in this case.
But in relating this back to your own life, consider winning a championship the closet comparison to your own personal goals. What would you do to get there? If you were given the opportunity to obtain your goal today by taking the easy way out, would you? I think I would…
